Junior Swim Squad

Squad Criteria

The Junior Swim squad is the first level squad that is a progression from the Sharks Learn to Swim Level. This squad is designed for ages 7-10 years. Members of this squad are encouraged to swim and attend 3 sessions per week with a maximum 4 sessions per week available on the membership.

 Swimmers will develop:

  • The technical/skill development over all 4 strokes
  • Increase in level of aerobic capacity and swimming for longer distances
  • Encouragement of intra-club and inter-club races and competitions
  • Understanding of expectations and etiquette of training in a swimming squad
  • Promotion of the sport for fun & fitness

This squad will have a strong focus on technique and aerobic fitness capacity. Swimmers must be able to swim all 4 strokes efficiently to pass out of the Advanced Learn to Swim. Swimmers looking to progress into the representative program or development program must meet the designated criteria for each level.

Swimmers will be able to demonstrate:

  • Efficient stroke technique in 4 strokes & streamlining
  • Drill progressions in 4 strokes
  • IM swimming
  • All turns
  • Starts in 4 strokes
  • Correct finishes
  • Paceclock work
  • Lane discipline and etiquette
  • Rules of sport
  • Punctual start times and appropriate attitude and behaviour for all sessions
  • Stretching exercises
  • Training equipment: fins, kick board, pull buoy, drink bottle, skipping rope

Selection Criteria

  • Must hold at least 2 individual Swimming Metro South West Qualifying times for 8 years and under
  • Minimum age 6 years
  • Must be successful in passing Learn to Swim Graduation Criteria
